What Is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant is an advanced tooth-replacement solution in which a biocompatible titanium screw (the implant) is anchored into the jawbone, mimicking the function of a natural tooth root. Once the implant has fused with your bone (osseointegration), a bespoke abutment and crown are attached to restore full chewing ability, appearance and long-term durability.
Key benefits:
Natural look & feel: Indistinguishable from your own teeth.
Preserves adjacent teeth: No need to file down healthy neighbours.
Prevents bone loss: Stimulates the jawbone and maintains facial structure.
Longevity: With proper care, implants can last decades—often a lifetime.

The Dental Implant Process
Step 1: Initial Assessment & Imaging
Visual exam of teeth, gums and bite alignment.
3D CBCT scan & X-rays to measure bone volume, density and nerve pathways.
Medical review to rule out uncontrolled conditions (e.g. diabetes).
Dentist will then tailor a treatment plan, discuss expected outcomes and provide a transparent fee estimate. At Diestel & Partners, our assessment fee is HKD 700, which includes CT scan.
Step 2: Pre-operative Preparation
Oral hygiene optimisation: Treat any gum disease or decay.
Anaesthesia options: Local anaesthetic is standard; sedation or general anaesthesia is available for anxious patients.
Step 3: Implant Placement Surgery
Under sterile conditions and your chosen anaesthetic, a small incision is made in the gum.
A precise hole is drilled into the jawbone using guided-surgery technology.
The titanium implant is seated securely.
Gum tissue is sutured closed over a healing cap.
Step 4: Osseointegration (Healing Phase)
Duration: 6 weeks to several months.
Care instructions: Soft diet (porridge, soups), no smoking, diligent oral hygiene, and prescribed antibiotics/analgesics.
Step 5: Abutment & Crown Fabrication
Once healed, the healing cap is replaced with an abutment.
A digital scan (CEREC) captures precise impressions.
A custom all-ceramic crown is milled and bonded to the abutment.
Step 6: Aftercare & Maintenance
Brush twice daily and floss around the implant.
Attend professional cleanings every 4–6 months.
Avoid biting hard objects (nuts, ice) and wear a night guard if you grind your teeth.

How Much Does a Dental Implant Cost?
The cost of dental implants can vary from patient to patient, depending on several key factors:
Number of implants
A single tooth implant will cost less than multiple implants or full-arch restorations such as All-on-4.
Implant brand
Premium implant systems like Straumann or Nobel Biocare tend to be more expensive, but offer excellent quality and long-term success.
Surgical complexity
Additional procedures such as bone grafting or sinus lifts can increase the overall cost.
Crown material
All-ceramic crowns are more aesthetically pleasing and durable, but generally cost more than metal-ceramic options.
*At Diestel & Partners, we offer transparent pricing. Our consultation fee is HKD 700, which includes a CT scan and a detailed treatment plan to help you understand the full cost of your implant treatment.
Compared to traditional dentures, dental implants are a long-term investment in your oral health, function, and confidence.

Potential Post-Implant Complications & Prevention
Though implant success rates exceed 95%, it’s important to be aware of possible issues:
Peri-implantitis (Implant-site infection)
- Symptoms: Swollen, bleeding gums; pain around the implant.
- Prevention: Strict home care, professional cleanings, control risk factors (smoking, diabetes).
- Treatment: Local debridement, antibiotics; surgery if severe.
Overloading & Mechanical Failure
- Symptoms: Loose crown or abutment, discomfort when chewing.
- Prevention: Avoid hard foods, wear a night guard if you grind your teeth.
- Treatment: Crown or abutment replacement; occlusal adjustment.
Nerve Injury
- Symptoms: Numbness or tingling in lips, chin or tongue.
- Prevention: 3D CBCT-guided planning to avoid nerve canals.
- Treatment: Often temporary; medication or microsurgical referral if persistent.
Sinus Complications (Upper-jaw implants)
- Symptoms: Sinus pressure, nasal congestion, headaches.
- Prevention: Accurate sinus-lift procedures when needed.
- Treatment: Antibiotics, possible ENT referral.
Rare Risks
- Infection: From inadequate oral hygiene or pre-existing gum disease.
- Implant failure: Due to poor osseointegration (e.g. smokers, osteoporosis).
- Gum recession: Prevented by gentle cleaning and regular check-ups.

What Should Patients Know Before and After Getting Dental Implants?
Before Dental Implant Treatment
Ideal candidates: Individuals with healthy gums, sufficient jawbone, and no serious chronic health issues are typically suitable for dental implants.
Preparation: Patients are advised to stop smoking, manage blood sugar levels, and complete any necessary periodontal treatment beforehand.
Mental readiness: It’s important to understand the procedure, expected costs, and communicate openly with your dentist about your expectations and concerns.
After Dental Implant Treatment
Dietary adjustments: Stick to soft foods in the initial recovery phase and avoid anything that might irritate the surgical area.
Oral hygiene: Maintain good oral hygiene to prevent infection—daily brushing, flossing, and antibacterial rinses are essential.
Follow-up appointments: Regular check-ups help monitor implant stability and allow early detection of any issues.
