What Are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the last set of molars that usually emerge between the ages of 17 and 25. While some people have wisdom teeth that grow without issues, many face complications due to limited space or abnormal growth directions, such as:

Impacted Wisdom Teeth

Teeth trapped within the jawbone, unable to erupt properly.

Crowding

Wisdom teeth pushing against other teeth, causing misalignment.

Gum Infections

Inflammation or abscess formation around the wisdom teeth.

Damage to Adjacent Teeth

Pressure from wisdom teeth can lead to decay or structural damage in neighbouring teeth.

Why Is Wisdom Teeth Removal Necessary?

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, often emerge during late adolescence or early adulthood. While some people experience no issues with their wisdom teeth, others may face a variety of complications that necessitate their removal. Here are some of the most common reasons why wisdom teeth extraction is advised:

  • Relief from Pain and Discomfort
  • Protecting Surrounding Teeth and Gums
  • Enhancing Orthodontic Results
  • Addressing Severe Decay or Structural Issues
  • Preventing Periodontal Disease

Simple and Surgical Tooth Extractions

Simple Extraction
Before extracting a tooth, the dentist will apply a local anaesthetic to numb the gums in the affected area, ensuring a pain-free procedure.

Surgical Extraction
In cases requiring surgical extraction, the dentist will create a small incision in the gum near the tooth. If necessary, surrounding bone may be removed to facilitate the extraction.

The Process of Wisdom Tooth Removal

  • Number of Visits: 1 – 2 visits
  • Completion Time: 30 – 60 minutes
  • Recovery Period: 1 – 3 days

Step 1: Initial Assessment

  • Examination: The dentist will conduct an oral examination and may take a panoramic X-ray to assess the position and growth of the wisdom teeth.
  • Treatment Plan: The dentist will explain the necessity of extraction and discuss potential risks.

Step 2: Anaesthesia

  • Local Anaesthesia: An anaesthetic will be administered to numb the area around the tooth for a painless experience.
  • General Anaesthesia: For patients who feel nervous or anxious about the procedure, general anaesthesia is available.

Step 3: Tooth Extraction

  • Non-Surgical: Special dental tools are used to loosen the tooth and remove it from the socket.
  • Gum Incision: For teeth that haven’t fully emerged, the dentist will make an incision in the gum and remove any bone covering the tooth.
  • Tooth Sectioning: If necessary, the tooth is divided into smaller pieces for easier removal.
  • Cleaning and Suturing: After extraction, the wound will be cleaned, stitched with surgical thread, and covered with gauze to stop bleeding.

Step 4: Aftercare and Instructions

  • Post-Procedure Care: The dentist will provide wound care instructions, pain relief medication, and dietary advice.
  • Follow-Up: A follow-up appointment within 7–14 days is recommended to monitor healing and remove stitches if necessary.

Step 5: Recovery

  • Healing Process: Recovery typically takes a few days to a week. Swelling and discomfort may occur but should gradually subside.
