Dental Crowns & Bridges - CEREC

Dental crowns and bridges are prosthetic dental devices that are cemented onto existing teeth. We are committed to helping you maintain a radiant and natural smile. Dental crowns can protect fractured or heavily restored teeth or cover decayed teeth where old fillings are exposed.

Crowns are also commonly recommended after root canal treatment (endodontics). In cases of missing teeth, your dentist may suggest a dental bridge to replace the missing teeth and prevent adjacent teeth from shifting. If your jawbone is insufficient to support dental implants, a dental bridge may also be recommended.

What’s The Difference Between Crowns and Bridges?

Helping maintain the health of your smile is our goal at Diestel & Partners. Crowns can help protect a tooth broken or heavily filled, or one with an old filling that is leaking. Caps are also placed after a root canal. Bridges are used to replace missing teeth and prevent the adjacent teeth from moving into the empty space. Bridges are used if the bone is not stable enough for a dental implant.

What to Expect

We have a CEREC system to fabricate same-day crowns. Rather than physical impressions, we have scanning technology to create digital impressions. It’s necessary to reduce the size of your existing tooth somewhat, so that the crown or bridge will fit over the tooth without adding bulk to your smile. Based on your digital impressions, we’ll use our CEREC milling machine to create your crown, and then place it at the same appointment.

We have a full-time CEREC technician who makes 90% of our crowns in-house. In some complex cases, we will send your digital impressions to the lab to fabricate the crown.

Whether you’re getting a crown or a bridge, we’ll show you a gallery of pre- and post-procedure photos from other patients, so you can see what a wonderful difference it can make in your smile.

Why Use Dental Crowns?

Severe Tooth Decay:
When a tooth is extensively damaged due to decay, standard fillings may not be enough to restore strength and aesthetics. A dental crown becomes an ideal option.

After Root Canal Treatment (Endodontics):
Root canal treatment removes the nerve and blood vessels from inside the tooth, leaving it more fragile. A dental crown provides protection and prevents potential fractures.

Worn or Cracked Teeth:
Excessive tooth wear or habitual grinding (bruxism) can cause enamel loss or cracks. Dental crowns protect the teeth from further damage and restore proper biting function.

Cosmetic Improvements:
For teeth with natural discolouration (e.g., tetracycline stains) or unsatisfactory shape, crowns can enhance aesthetics.

Process of Getting a Dental Crown or Bridge

  • Number of Visits: 2–3
  • Time Required: 7-10 days
  • Recovery Time: N/A

1. Tooth Preparation:
Your dentist will evaluate the condition of your teeth and address any required treatments first. For a crown, the existing tooth will be reshaped to make room for the crown.

For patients worried about pain, or those with prior negative dental experiences, we provide dental anaesthesia to ensure a pain-free treatment.

2. Impressions for Modelling:
An impression of the tooth surface will be taken to create an accurate model.
A temporary crown will be placed over the prepared tooth to protect it.
The impressions will be sent to a dental laboratory, where the final crown is crafted.

3. Permanent Crown Placement:
Once ready, the permanent crown will be checked for fit, colour, and shape. Your dentist will then securely attach it to the prepared tooth and make minor bite adjustments if necessary.

Types of Crowns and Bridges

1. All-Ceramic Crowns:

  • Made entirely of ceramic, offering a natural and aesthetic appearance.
  • Resistant to staining.
  • Slightly less strong than metal crowns but highly durable, suitable for patients prioritizing aesthetics.

2. Metal-Ceramic Crowns:

  • Features a metal base covered with ceramic for a natural look.
  • The edges may display a thin metal line.
  • Strong and ideal for restoring back teeth.

3. Full Metal Crowns:

  • Made from precious metals like gold or platinum.
  • Extremely strong and resistant to wear.
  • Requires minimal tooth preparation.
  • Less aesthetically pleasing and typically used for back teeth.

You’re in Control

New patients are sometimes reluctant to have a crown because they’re afraid it will hurt, or because they’ve had a bad experience at a different dentist in the past. We take our time to explain everything and answer all your questions, and offer sedation options so you won’t feel anything. If you need a break, we will take a break. We help you feel confident and in control of the process.

Root Canal

Because a root canal can leave a tooth very weak and susceptible to fracture, we always recommend a crown after a root canal. We tell patients not to have a root canal, unless they are also willing to have the crown placed.
