What Is a Tooth Filling?
A tooth filling is a treatment used to restore a tooth that has been affected by decay or general wear. It effectively seals the tooth to prevent further issues and returns it to its original function. You can think of it as fixing a small flaw before it has a chance to develop into a more significant concern.

When Do You Need a Filling?
A filling may be necessary if you experience any of the following:
- You have a cavity (which is tooth decay caused by bacterial activity).
- There is a minor chip in your tooth.
- A previous filling has become loose, damaged, or shows signs of wear.
- Your tooth enamel has worn down due to grinding, dietary acids, or the natural aging process.
Addressing these concerns promptly is crucial. Leaving them untreated can result in increased discomfort, infection, or the need for more involved treatments such as a root canal.
The Simple, Comfortable Tooth Filling Process
There’s no need to be concerned—the process is simple and efficient!
Step 1: Numbing the Area
A local anesthetic is applied to ensure you feel no pain.
Step 2: Removing Decay
We carefully remove the decayed portion of the tooth.
Step 3: Placing the Filling
The selected filling material is placed and set.
Step 4: Polishing & Adjusting
We polish and adjust the filling so it feels natural and your bite is comfortable.
Time: The procedure typically takes 30–60 minutes. Discomfort: Patients generally feel only mild pressure.
Healing & Aftercare
Once your procedure is complete, it’s common for the numbness to last for 1–2 hours. We recommend avoiding chewing on the numb side and consuming hot foods or drinks until the sensation fully returns. Temporary, mild sensitivity to temperature is normal and should subside within a few days. Maintain your regular brushing and flossing routine to ensure the longevity of your filling.
